Hard to swallow. It has a style of writing that I don’t particularly enjoy and it was really hard to read it entirely. Doesn’t have a satisfying romance or war plot. The last chapters were supposed to be critical for the story, but instead it felt dull and sometimes rushed. The characters personalities seemed forced and shallow, their deaths and/or suffering didn’t mean anything to me and I couldn’t sympathize with any of them at all. The world building tries to be detailed but, in reality, the pieces seemed patched together and not actually planned out. What bothered me the most was the confusing and dull explanations of feelings and events instead of showing me and making me actually feel that. Some parts were salvageable and I actually got some good laughs. My favorite line was in page 361: “You do not get to love someone and think they won’t feel it”
While the book was a very interesting read, it’s plot driven stance and limited character development means it would honestly be a better movie than book. It’s forced romance was also off putting. However, it was still a very fun read for bookclub!
