Good Action, Horrible Story

The biggest selling points are the animation and action. They go all out with the fight scenes, but as a movie on its own, you get no reason to care for the characters.
This goes all out with its fights, complete with the blood and gore, as well as the X-ray shots, emphasizing the damage. The games are known for those. They go all out with the breaking bones, complete with the sound effects. The blood-filled chaos gets you going. The voice acting is good, too; the highlight of which being Fred Tatasciore's performance. The movie starts with strong fight scenes: first the attack on Wu Shi Academy, and then Sub-Zero and Smoke sparring...
The rest goes downhill. They bring in many named characters, which we see fighting in the second tournament. Then, after watching them fight only once and lose, they come off as shoehorned in. Again, if this were a movie without a brand, the characters are given little to no development. The named characters die before being given a reason to like or hate them.
The plot is a muddled mess. If this were "Battle of the Realms", it should've been about only the second tournament. I don't know if they were rushed with the animation, but all their fights are in only the colosseum. The sub-plot of Scorpion and Sub-Zero's feud comes off as an afterthought. The transitions between them are like paid programming and commercial breaks. Furthermore, the climax is totally pointless. As much as they want to sell on the fantasy genre, the fight between giants is also an afterthought, and unnecessary.
If you're a hardcore fan of the "Mortal Kombat" series, you will find this movie insulting.
