How are ratings calculated?
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzes reviews to verify trustworthiness.

2.0 out of 5 stars Nothing New Here
Reviewed in Canada 🇨🇦 on December 4, 2022
I have read many CEO and leadership type books over the years and there is little new here. Caroyln has a history of taking credit for old science. She renames the terms then presents the same ideas as her own. Ex. "attitude" science became her new "mindset" science and she created a career out of it. She is not the only one who is doing this. Unfortunately, way too many authors these days are only regurgitating what others have written. How many books on habits do we have now? Atomic Habits, Tiny Habits and on and on (and my upcoming book entitled "Really, Really Small Habits". All are just regurgitating the ideas of others. It's so easy to publish a book now, we're many jump onto the band wagon.

This is another book where the authors attempt to belittle the significant work of others while trying to present their ideas as more solid. Most of the ideas in this book weren't new to me.

The book starts out by saying that when they pulled data on the best CEOs, they found the vast majority were white males. They didn't like that and felt it was a "tired list", so they introduced criteria to ensure the list contained a significant percentage of non-whites and females (i.e. manipulated the data). They excluded CEOs like Jeff Bezos as they felt that too many of the top companies were started by men who would have too much power and control over decisions, so they felt that wasn't fair. They opted to look for ways to include people who were promoted in companies that have strong diversity and inclusion cultures (i.e. you need to promote and hire more "insert minority" to fit our quota).

Imagine wanting to know what sets the best hockey players apart but being told there are too many white males from Canada and Russian. That list is tired, so you tweaked the criteria so your new list shows 40% of the top players are females from Kenya. This is where we're at in 2022.

Despite all that nonsense, I really wanted to like this book, but I conclude there are better options out there. After 30 years in leadership positions, I found little new in this book.

This book was one of the best business books I have had the pleasure to read in a long time. I appreciated the organization and the actionable points that followed each chapter. Much research and detail clearly went into the writing and I left feeling inspired to implement a number of great ideas.

This book is a must-read for all organizational leaders.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Business Book in 30 years... because it's more than about business - it's personal.

One of the first things a reader discovers in this book is how lonely being a CEO often is. You’ve reached the top, but all of a sudden, everyone wants a piece of you. And everyone holds you responsible for everything.

This book looks at how that feels and what that means through the eyes and actions of the world’s best corporate leaders. How each CEO meets the pressures and opportunities of their position comes through so clearly because the authors have chosen to let each CEO use their own voice to tell their personal story and choose their best insights. The breadth of global experience presented has never been achieved before, especially not at this level. And although these are exceptional people, they're still people at day’s end and this comes through in a remarkable variety of observations, grouped perceptively along 6 “mindsets” to make it easier to self-reflect and take action. There are plenty of compelling numbers and statistics that one would expect from a deeply researched firm such as McKinsey & Co. which makes this much more than a CEO self-help book.

The first reason many will buy this book may be the chance to sit inside the rarified space we can only remotely hear from in media. The second reason is the sheer number of good ideas, most amazingly simple, that turned a culture, situation or meeting around. But after reading CEO Excellence, the most profound connection even a casual reader will hopefully have is that taking the sense of gigantic scale away, the position of the CEO is felt by all of us in one very intimate way - our personal lives, where we are ultimately alone, however interconnected with the people and environments we navigate.

If you are a CEO, want to be a CEO, or simply seek better leadership of yourself, this book feels like sitting down with some of the smartest people in business and letting them whisper in your ear what they wish they would have known when they first sat down in the big chair. And what they are thinking to do next.

This is the first online book review I've ever written, but it deserves writing. More than a playbook, CEO Excellence is a personal as well as business journey written for all of us.

The book CEO Excellence opens powerfully. Page 12 articulates what sets this it apart.

Systemic pattern recognition on what the most successful leaders  have done across
multiple years, industries, and geographies, all backed by analytics.

The authors describe how the world’s leading CEOs recognize the powerful potential of the insights they were able to generate
as well as the surprise that this had not been done before.

I underlined this pasage.  Then I got out a set of colored sticky arrows.  I’m fascinated with this because I’m working on launching advanced technologies from academic research to real world applications that will generate data over years, across industries and geographies.
CEO Excellence has enabled me to tap into the wisdom of the top 1% of thought leaders, to flesh out our strategies for
• Setting the direction
• Orgnizational alignment
• Engaging our guiding coalition,  and our  stakeholders.

Thank you McKinsey for writing this book.
