The purpose of the investment journal is to assist consultants in developing and running an investment case that will be used in implementing a solution to a business problem. This book, like all of the "journal" books by FirmsConsulting is divided into three parts. Part one, answers questions that a consultant may have on what is an investment case and goes into detail answering questions that may come up as an engagement proceeds. The questions are answered at a level of detail such that an inexperienced person can come up to speed quickly on what to do and what pitfalls to avoid. Part two covers what to do on a week-by-week basis to implement an investment case study. Most engagements run about 8-12 weeks and the journal describes what needs to be done each week.
Part three is made up of templates that a consultant can use to implement their own engagement. The templates are based on what is presented in part two. What I liked about the journal was how detailed FirmsConsulting was in detailing every step. What would have made the journal better would have been a table of contents at the beginning. Additionally, integrating some of the sections answering common questions in part 1 into the the weekly description of the project steps in part 2 would have made the book easier to read. Overall, it is a very good book.

The Investment Journal is another exciting entry in the Journal series by Kris Safarova. This series is focused on providing a step by step guide for the person/team that is running a specific type of consulting engagement. In this case the engagement is related to constructing a business case for a client investment. How does one go about this? This journal provides those details in a step by step, week by week and even day by day fashion. The journal begins by describing what an investment case and how to contextualize it in terms of thinking. Afterwards it goes into more details in terms of the nuances for how to think of the business case. For example, have you ever thoughts about what the difference is between financial analysis, financial modeling and investment cases? Or how to explain said differences to a client on an engagement? The journal goes into this nuanced detail and even has templates for what to do on a day by day basis. In fact, the journal is constructed in a way that you can just write directly into it and use it for an engagement directly.

In a world that has becomes more digital there is still something satisfying about putting pen to paper. If you or your team is on the ground floor and about to start an investment engagement, I highly recommend reviewing this Journal before Day 1 to really hit the ground running.

This is by far one of the best books FC has published to meticulously explain the meaning of rigorous communication on studies (and especially if the objective is to implement the recommendation) and how important communication is to leave the client to act upon your recommended solution.

It breaks down an investment case in a strongly logical base explaining the difference between what you think it is and what it is in both a broad sense and in detail (in some cases). Again, this shows how crucial communication is whatever you are doing in life.

I believe that this is one of the heavy beliefs FC stands for and is very pedantic about; to communicate at crisp and clear as possible to be influential and make an impact.

As always, I recommend this book for everyone that would like to excel in life and make an impact on the world.

I haven’t seen a book like this covering the topic. It is wonderful. It does a great job laying out the process and frameworks to analyze and build an investment case for a potential opportunity. It includes a detailed description of the process and how to think about things, walks through week-by-week the steps in a study, provides an example of a study, and provides blank templates to help you work through your own study. It follows a similar approach of the other journals published by the author, and this one is my favorite thus far since it is closest to much of the work I’ve done in my career. It’s not just for consultants though, the concepts apply equally well in industry. You can draw from key concepts throughout the process, leverage the templates, and apply what makes sense for your particular situation.

There's nothing else like this - a tremendous resource for any consultant.
