How are ratings calculated?
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzes reviews to verify trustworthiness.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great idea, but didn't connect with voice and plot

What I liked: the idea!

It felt fresh and different, though it explored old tropes.

What I didn't connect with: the voice didn't gel with me, through the perspective was unique. I just struggled to be compelled by the MC's reasoning and motivation. I kept wondering throughout the book what exactly drew Alex to the house. Alex didn't seem particularly close to the Usher siblings, and yet they felt the need to come after one cryptic letter invitation.

Overall, there were several inconsistencies in this plot: if a certain character pretty much orchestrated their own demise, why did they write to Alex, calling for help? So much of human motivation was left underdeveloped - especially compared to the motivation of the fungi:)

The ending was predictable and anticlimactic. I dare say I was bored.

Will definitely read this author's next horror, but this one was my least favourite of the Kingfisher books I've read so far.

3.0 out of 5 stars Would Make a Decent Short Story on the Web, Not an Actual Book

The premise is interesting and the overall story is as well. However, it falls flat in a majority of the book. Takes more than 85% of the book to get things going with the story, the majority of the book feels like filler and just drags it’s feet. Then when the story starts picking up and getting good it’s already the end and it’s very rushed. Basically it’s tons of buildup, very little payoff.

3.0 out of 5 stars A good read but a short novel

When the book arrived in the post I was disappointed by how few pages it was (only 176). I was expecting double the size for the price, for such a small book it works out 10p per page. But that's my fault for not checking and making assumptions. The story kept me entertained, I didn't find it as creepy or unsettling as other reviews, it was just so-so and I was also a bit disappointed to read the author's note at the end and learn that it wasn't an original idea, but rather a retelling of Poe, but again, if I had done my research this would have been clear and it shouldn't take away from the story, it's still captivating and the writing style is good.

This was ok. Not my favorite book of T. Kingfisher, but not the worst book I've read this year. It felt a little slow to me.

3.0 out of 5 stars Funny quick read with an edge of strangeness

The first 30 pages were a bit slow but the book picks up around page 40. I was expecting a little more horror but the comedy kept me going!

Loved this read! Suspenseful, informative, just enough body horror to make you squirm. Another banger from T Kingfisher, as usual!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not For Me

I have thoroughly enjoyed all of the books I’ve read by T.Kingfisher in the past and was looking forward to reading this when it came out. I really struggled with rating this one as it is not a bad book by any means I just don’t think that alien fungus appeals to me. I still look forward to the next book she publishes in 2023!
