I love the Emperor's Edge series. The author writes with great maturity and finesse. She has put together a cohort of such disparate characters, it is a miracle they can do anything together. There's the irreverent, lazy teenaged gangster whose favorite expression is "whatever", a pedantic middle-aged academic failure, a self-involved gigolo, a severely damaged former slave who was forced into combat against his natural inclinations and is left mute and—my favorite—a ruthless assassin with borderline autism (or so it seems to me). Each character seems to have his own agenda—often detrimental to the groups goals—in addition to the quests that they have to fulfill. Leading this group of outlaws is a young woman who abhors killing, but is determined to fight for justice and right, even risking her own life in the hope of eventually getting a pardon from her emperor. The series has is one of the sexiest, most subtle romances I've read in ages. It's the subtlety that makes it so effective. I wish this series could go on forever.
The first line, chapter, right from the very first words...grips your attention and never lets go! I love Amaranthe...and her talking to herself,...very humerous, and a terrific read! I'm going back through the series for the 4th? Time...and it's as good as the first!she has new ones just coming out... and I a,m saving them until after I've re read all the others! I know the new series will be a page turner and not able to be put down....! It's hard to put the older series down, even if they are a re read!
Very interesting that the author must have investigated many parameters of engineering, political, social behaviors to get many of the mechanics of each thing she writes about correct. Also, she writes with a vocabulary that is very refreshing and not mundane. I am trying to follow all her works now because of such interesting plots. Well worth the read.
I rarely give books 5 starts unless I really enjoyed it. This is one of those series that made me laugh and was perfect to relax and immerse myself in. The comrade and sarcastic banter between the team members was probably my biggest highlight. This is my first time reading a book series from this author, it was cheap and in a box set, so it was worth a gamble. Usually you get what you pay for, but I was impressed and enjoyed Lindsay's writing style. It was very descriptive with excellent adjectives that drew vivid pictures in my mind.
I'm definitely going to add her to my list of authors to follow in the future. Onto book 4 now!
Well-developed interesting characters. Plots good at first but there's a certain sameness to them. Someone, usually the heroine, takes a crazy risk and gets captured, and then is rescued beyond all hope. The writing is interesting but the sameness wears.
It is great! I'm on the last book in the trilogy. I cannot explain too much but the characters all seem real. Their interactions are like real life! I'm amazed at the story is still interesting in the 3rd book.
