Coaching conversations aren't about asking right questions or using a set of tools. Coaching is not, and should not be, limited to a coach's office or therapist's room either, but applied in our daily interactions with family members, friends and colleagues as well.
Haesun Moon beautifully illustrates the positive difference intentional interactions can make, even with simple and ordinary language that's common and familiar to us.
Inspiring real life stories coupled with easy to understand description of specific coaching concepts will broaden your understanding of coaching. Reflective questions at the end of each chapter invite you to write your own story while refining your coaching perspectives.
If you're looking for a coaching text book, this isn't for you. If you want coaching to be part of your life, then you need this book.
Haesun was my professor when I did my solution-focused coaching certificate at the University of Toronto and she was truly brilliant. One of the best professors I ever had. So when I found out that she wrote a book, I had to read it right away. It captures 26 incredible approaches to powerful conversations for coaches and leaders and really anyone who wants to have better conversations. Her deep knowledge of the Solution-focus is written in a way that makes it easy for anyone to read. As I read each page I realized this could really be a handbook for how to re-write your own daily narrative, both the conversations you have with others and yourself. I loved every page and am so thrilled she has shared her brilliance with the world.
Coaching for far too long has needed a book that challenges some of the long-held beliefs about what coaching is about. This author is what I call a savvy disruptor. They say the true skill is to cause arguments to lose force without the other person losing face. This book challenges many of the dominant beliefs in coaching and challenges them in such a gentle way. The author provides useful ideas and frameworks. She also provides many stories and examples that are both practical and insightful. A particularly nice touch is the exercises at the end of each chapter. Any book that manages to find words for x,y, and z signals a thoughtful and insightful author. Worth the read and might even be good to use as a study/practice group.
I wasn't expecting a book about coaching to leave me with such a beautiful feeling. The true stories at the beginning of each chapter are so moving. I love how it highlights a simple idea in each chapter that can effortlessly enhance your coaching. No complicated processes or techniques. Important distinctions that are not only about coaching, they are about a respectful way of being and communicating with another.
I am a coach so of course I might enjoy this book. But I couldn't stop talking to my wife about it - who would never be interested in a coaching book. She actually picked it up and started reading it - and absolutely LOVES it!
I love the short chapters. It's not a book you read cover to cover. It's to be read one chapter at a time and savoured for the day. It's also the kind of book you can open up anywhere! Each chapter stands on its own. I recommend it for coaches AND all human beings. I don't know that I could recommend any other coaching book in that way.
This book is the perfect blend of teaching, insight, wisdom and personal stories finished off with reflective questions. It is an easy and enjoyable read, so much so you might not realize how impactful each chapter is.
This is a book I will reread and most definitely gift to my clients and friends.
The author jntroduces a simple - yet complex -tool that helps coaches listen to what the client is saying and where to guide the conversation in service of the client. Written beautifully with lots of gems!
I bought this book for a friend who has recently entered the coaching profession. I may have to buy another for my friend as I really think this one is mine! Beautifully written with engaging stories that show the extraordinary power of ordinary words.
