Like many other reviewers I immensely disliked that the author ruined El’s character by that random but of gratuitous lgbtq pandering. It literally made no sense to the plot or to the character of the protagonist. El is for Ely loyal why would she sleep with that awful woman when she was grieving Orion. Also this book felt rushed. It lacked satisfaction and after the build up of the relationship between El and Orion this booked ruined it. They didn’t get a proper happily Ever after. This book felt like a warped conclusion to what had been a fantastic series. I’m so disappointed. I enjoyed the previous two books but this one was dreadful. Great writing as usual but awful plot and conclusion to the serie. Urgh!!!
First of all, I wanted to state that the writing is, as always, superb. The storytelling is amazing because Ms. Novik is a very talented writer. However, Ms. Novik and I seem to have very different views on morals, and for me cheating will never be okay. Especially since it feels so… flat and forced. I mean it feels like Ms. Novik really wanted to be politically correct and make her character queer so she threw this plotline in, while El was moving heaven and earth to save Orion. It simply didn’t make sense for her to cheat on him. I get it, they weren’t exactly a couple, she was confused, and emotionally compromised. I hated it all the same. I am sorry.
I really enjoyed the first 2 books in this series. Novik did a good job of creating characters who were interesting if not always likable. The world building was second to none…and then book 3. I spent time skipping page after page of meaningless narrative and watched to story disintegrate into something icky and offensive. What a disappointment…. I do not recommend this book. I wish she’d ended things after book 2.
