I enjoyed reading this book. It is difficult for me to imagine people living in these conditions in North America during my lifetime.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great read, wonky ending

I enjoyed the Bible knowledge. This was a great story. I skipped the non essential gory parts, it was only one chapter.
I had to re-write the kiss at the end in my head, so it sounded romantic and made sense. And the very last sentence in the book was a really wonky ending. Other than that it was a great story

An easy to read, yet enlightening novel which tells of a life in the poor coal mining communities of the Great Depression. The characters come to life with detailed descriptions. There is story telling, suspense, love, greed and compassion as well as exposure to an interesting educational outreach program of this era. This is an interesting a enjoyable novel.

This was a very moving story about two families whose past and present intertwine when a very wicked man comes to town. There was a lot of history involved. I found it very interesting to read about pack horse librarians! It must have been quite the adventure, for the librarian and the families receiving books, some for the first time. I felt that the writer did an amazing job in making the emotions of the characters real for the readers. I really felt like I could feel the pain of the miners' families, worrying about their men. Or of Finn, needing and craving the light and the air. The strength of the characters she wove was inspiring, and I felt so involved in their lives. Towards the end I couldn't put the book down. I would definitely read it again.

Set in the Appalachian Mountains in the early 1940’s, Amanda rides her mule Junebug and carries books to families living on the hillsides as part of the WPA project to bring literacy to people living far from the city libraries. The stories of the tough, kind, and adventurous mountain people is heartwarming.

4.0 out of 5 stars Accurate depiction of Appalachia Mountain life in the late 30's

Light to the Hills was a fascinating tale about the traveling librarian program unveiled by FDR following the hard times of the great depression. Dialogue, similes and metaphors captured the dialect of the rural mountain folk of Tennessee. Character development used good detail of daily life to enhance the personalities. There was a lot of conflict that kept the story moving, but the ending was a little too perfect to be believable.

4.0 out of 5 stars beautiful writing, good story

Beautiful, descriptive writing, with a compelling story about a unique place and time. It captivated me from the beginning. However, it took a plot turn that was not credible to me. The estrangement of one of the characters from parents happened too abruptly, lasted too long, without anyone willing to talk about it?! Within relationships that were previously loving and functional, but everyone was too stunned to say a word? The book almost lost me there. Just wasn’t credible. I do understand estrangement, and this could’ve worked if there had been a history of dysfunction described, with the pivotal incident being the straw that broke the camels back. But to propose that a previously loving parent would automatically believe gossip about their child from strangers without allowing child to explain, just doesn’t make sense. Where were the editors on this? But the writing was superb and because of that I am open to reading more from this author. Just work on the story arc!

At first I thought this book seemed to be more about Sass, a young girl who meets the book woman. Then the story focused on the book woman, with a lot of back story going on, but not a lot of focus on her job as a book woman. Overall, it’s a good read that’s well written.

I loved this book! I didn’t know about the WPA Pack Horse Library Project or the women who carried books on horseback or mule to people in the Appalachian hills. The author weaves a wonderful tapestry about Amanda and Sass and their families. I so admire the women characterized in the story. Clean and wholesome story full of light and laughter.
