Joe is the best. Everything he seems to do he does in a natural, good humored, helpful, fun and engaging way. The stories flow in expressing and explaining how any educational leader can accomplish what they want with his ideas. This resource is his 1-Minute Walk to Work on steroids, and you will gain so much incredible insight on every page. Thank you Joe for all that you share to help us all support our students better.
Confession: I already follow, read, and listen to Dr. Sanfelippo in many forms: through podcasts, on Twitter, and especially during his 1-minute walk to work and the classic bike check at Fall Creek on Instagram (which you have to follow if you enjoy dad jokes--I mean puntastic humor). I have been looking forward to the release of this book and it absolutely aligns with the rest of his work and ethic. His message is always consistent and absolutely resonates...it's more than "messaging", it's just what he does and who he is.
This book cements the framework, strategies, and actions of leadership with stories and examples to illustrate the why, when, and how they work. What I really appreciate about this book is the way Dr. Sanfelippo shares his failures so that we may learn from them. It's easy to share success stories, but sharing the missteps and challenges provides even deeper learning opportunities and helps the rest of us to avoid similar pitfalls as leaders or build empathy, compassion, and understanding for those in the role. His willingness to examine his own actions and admit his mistakes is the ultimate modeling of the messiness of leadership.
Although the book is written from his lens, it is not an "all about me" book. The stories and moments he shares weave a bigger picture of what it means to be a part of a learning community, building awareness of how we can work together to encourage everyone to lead from any title, any role. Every school community will benefit from the power of its members feeling empowered to lead from where they are.
One of the best books ever written on school leadership, Lead From Where You Are recalibrates educator mindsets surrounding their leadership, regardless of role, while seamlessly walking readers through the Why, What, and How, of making it happen. You’ll find yourself laughing and then holding back tears on the same page, as Sanfelippo masterfully alters the leadership narrative through sharing stories and experiences while providing tangible ways to shift one’s own lens and practice. Whether you’re a support staff member, a teacher in year ten, or an experienced superintendent, this book is sure to inspire, encourage, and provide practical steps to leverage each school’s greatest asset - its people.

Joe manages to embrace the “how” as he defines the what and why, a piece that is usually lacking in leadership books. Reading through his purpose and how it defines what he does is inspiring. Have enjoyed watching his walks to work and here they’ve transitioned so well into written form… An easy read you can apply gems from, regardless of your role!
Joe S. shares the lessons learned from his years as a classroom, building and district leader. His stories provide context to the why, how and what necessary for sustained change. Joe’s humor intermixed with happy tears stories allows the reader to affirm their current practices and feel safe in trying new practices. Great read, ideas to try, let’s go!
