5.0 out of 5 stars A very engaging story
Reviewed in Canada 🇨🇦 on November 9, 2022
This novel deals with two families, the Wilfs and the Shankmans, neighbours in Avalon, a town in Westchester County, New York. In 1985, the teen-aged children of the Mimi and Ben Wilf were involved in an accident in which a friend of theirs was killed. This event has had a major effect on the lives of the Wilf family members.

The Shankmans moved in across the street from the Wilfs, and Dr. Ben Wilf and young Waldo Shankman, who as a young boy and a teen did not fit in with others his age, despite his brilliance, become friends. Their relationship will continue for decades.

This is an engaging story of life, its limitations and its possibilities. A very good read.

4.0 out of 5 stars A moving story of life's challenges and regrets.

“One incident is an invisible trip wire that in turn sets off another and another. Time collapses. There is no straight line.”
The result of an accident caused when 3 intoxicated teenagers get into a car, one of them behind the wheel, will haunt them and their families for the rest of their lives. Yet, none of them will ever speak of it, not even to one another. Two of the 3 are siblings, 18 year old Sarah Wilif and her brother, Theo (15). The third is a new friend and neighbor. “Silence didn’t make it go away but instead drove the events of that night more deeply into each of them."

The Shenkman’s are a young family living across the street from the Wilif’s. The father has been so influenced by his own abusive father that, as much as wants to, he cannot control his anger and frustration aimed toward his son. He wants his son, Waldo, to be like him. Waldo is instead a genius who loves the stars and the planets and yearns for someone to share that love and understand him. Ben Wilif, the doctor across the street who helped deliver Waldo in an emergency situation, could become that person.

Shapiro gives us an unusually in-depth look at each of her beautifully developed characters. The narration is in the present tense. Although the book goes from 1985 to 2020, the years in the book do not occur in chronological order and I found it confusing at times.

A moving story filled with the challenges of grief and regret. Although I enjoyed the book, I did not love it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

After having some alcohol, a girl encourages her younger brother to drive. He doesn't have license and there is another passenger in the car. He loses control and smashes the car I to a tree. The passenger dies. His sister tells everyone that she was driving.
Over the years, they each have to deal with the results of their actions.

THIS MAGICAL NOVEL! Dani Shapiro pulls off a stunning feat in her first novel in 15 years, moving (seemingly) effortlessly across time and perspectives while intricately and delicately braiding the narratives together into a luminous tapestry. She proves that writers don't need to sacrifice plot for style or prose for propulsion. I read this in one delicious reading session, moved to tears and wonder many, many times. This is a must-read for 2022!!!

I really liked this book. I liked how the author wove the stories of the two families together, creating realistic characters and situations. There is no triteness or sappiness in this story, but the reader can still feel an attachment and understanding to the characters. It's a good read.
