5.0 out of 5 stars Great book, ending blew me away
Reviewed in Canada 🇨🇦 on November 29, 2022
I have read and loved all of Nicholas Sparks' books. They all evoke so much emotion and this one does as well, but it is very different from any of his previous books. Dreamland is a dual narrative with the two stories not seeming to be related at all. Colby Mills had planned a career in music, but tragedy struck his family and now he is working with his aunt to run the family farm in North Carolina. He needs to take a break, so accepts a job playing in a bar in St. Pete's, Florida. He plans on heading home after a few weeks. While there, he meets college girl, Morgan Lee. She has just graduated from a prestigious music program and is the daughter of wealthy doctors in Chicago. They have much in common, and embark on a whirlwind romance. The second storyline is about Beverly and her six-year-old sons. They are fleeing an abusive husband and father and are struggling to make ends meet. They are living in a small town and she is quickly running out of money. She is worried that her husband, who works for Homeland Security is going to track them down. When I started to read it, I actually went back to see if I missed something, then just went with it. I knew it would all come together eventually and when they do, Wow.

I am not going to say anymore about the story or the characters because this is one that you need to experience yourself. All I will say is that the romance is sweet, and I loved how Morgan and Colby connected over music. They both took chances in the relationship and I wanted them to somehow work it all out. Beverly's story is tragic and sad and the ending had me in tears. Once again, Nicholas Sparks has written an extremely emotional and poignant story. One with issues and themes that are realistic and relatable. I recommend you pick this one up and just go with it.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love the new direction Nicholas Sparks has taken in this novel and think it might be my favorite!

“Over time, I’ve come to accept the notion that we don’t always get to choose our paths in life; sometimes, they choose us.”

Sparks explores what it involves to risk it all in pursuit of a dream and questions if it’s ever possible to leave the past behind.

To do so, he’s crafted three incredible characters. Colby Mills is a 25-year-old man headed for an aspiring musical career when he’s sidelined by family duties. Readers will instantly love him. After so much heartache, I just wanted him to be happy. I was invested in his journey from the start. I loved his introspection in these questions: “Did love carry with it the power to make a person question everything? Did love make a person want to become someone new?”

Morgan Lee, a 21-year-old influencer with aspirations was annoying, asked too many questions, and was too in your face, but she was perfect for Colby. Despite not appreciating her personality, I loved her determination and loved her insight into the fake world of social media influencers.

The timeline with Beverly and her six-year-old son, Tommie, was my favourite. I was instantly hooked reading about her escape and was on the edge of my seat hoping they’d make it to safety. I honestly couldn’t imagine how these two timelines would merge and was blown away when they did - a manoeuvre only an accomplished writer can pull off!

This needs to top your reading list…NOW!

I absolutely loved the heart-pounding suspense, the introspection, the romance, and the twists I did not see coming!

I was gifted this advance copy by Random House Publishing Group and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.
