Totally let down...nothing happened...the ending was so so predictable...quite saddened to read this from Horowitz...its like an Agatha Christie novel buy badly written....

3.0 out of 5 stars Rather a disappointment

I've enjoyed the previous Hawthorne novels so much that after a bit of inner debate I gave into temptation and, in these financially straitened times, decided to treat myself to The Twist of a Knife. But I was rather disappointed wished I hadn't rushed to spend £10 and had waited for the price to go down. It was entertaining but I found myself skipping chunks of description and thought the Hawthorne-Horowitz balance was out of kilter; their interactions were more pedestrian than in previous novels, not as amusing. Maybe that's because one gets used to the format and the novelty of it is lost. However, we were given new little titbits about Hawthorne that I'm guessing will be revisited later in the series. I will still look forward to the next story but I hope it will have regained some of its sparkle.

3.0 out of 5 stars Agatha Christie type mystery

The plot involves the author’s play. A critic is murdered. If you like Agatha Christie, you may like this book. I found the book’s plot and characters more like a stage play rather than real life.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun read

This was a light and enjoyable read. Not as good as the first two Hawthorne books but fun, nevertheless. Only objection is that the tagline: "a gripping locked room mystery" is wrong. It's not about a locked room at all!

3.0 out of 5 stars Maybe time for a break?

I loved this concept of Anthony Horowitz in his book writing Hawthorne' s investigations as a future novel. The first 3 books were very good, but this last one just didn't ignite as a story. Somehow the book felt flat and I think it was to do with the actual murder story

3.0 out of 5 stars Good read ...but

I enjoy this series of books with Anthony playing bumbling Captain Hastings to Hawthornes Poirot. However there were two pieces of dialogue which I found annoying and unbelievable. When the policeman says to Anthony that his son is a big fan but will be disappointed that he has become a murderer and when Jill says why did you do it. Both pieces of dialogue belong in the bin as they are totally at odds with what people would really say. If they are not I suggest Anthony should look for a more supportive wife.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing…

I finished British author Anthony Horowitz’s latest book, “The Twist of a Knife”, vaguely disappointed. I’ve read all three previous novels in the Daniel Hawthorne series and been pleased by Horowitz’s writing. He combined mystery and psychological insights into very entertaining books. However, “The Twist of a Knife” was different. It seemed to lack the zip of his previous books and was much more of a conventional murder mystery.

I’ve often wondered when an author a book series decides it’s time to end that series. It’s usually after a decline in the author’s writing. He seems to lose interest in his character and his former intricate plots unravel into ordinariness. I wonder if that’s happening with Anthony Horowitz and his Hawthorne series.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not his best

I have read all of the authors books, with the exception of his YA titles. I enjoyed them all, including this one, but after reading Michael Connelly, John Grisham, Louise Penny, etc. My tastes in detectives, and mystery novels seems to have changed. I prefer a grittier story, much like his House of Silk was. I guess I prefer an R-Rating to a PG, and this one isn't even PG-13. After finishing this one and comparing it to those other authors, the story and characters in this seem much closer to Alex Rider than to Harry Bosch.
And I would much prefer "riding around" with Inspector Gamache than Hawthorne.
To me, this series is played out.

3.0 out of 5 stars The weakest of the series.

Love the author. This one is just not as good as the others. When the main character is accused of murder, there is little suspense. You know he is getting off.
