Jon Acuff's blog-now-book "Stuff Christians Like" is a direct rip-off from the highly popular blog/book "Stuff White People Like." On purpose. Because one of the things that Christians like is ripping stuff off.

This book certainly wins my (completely arbitrary and made up) award for Best Introduction Ever:

If you buy this book, God will make you rich.

I was going to say, "If you read this book," but I'm pretty sure people who get it at the library won't receive the same amount of awesomeness as the people who buy it.

Acuff is the right mix of laugh out loud funny and poignant insight. As someone that appreciates and enjoys satire but finds most Christian satire as savouring strongly of bitterness (my love), I appreciate that Jon is funny without being hurtful, poking fun at the stuff while holding love for the people that do it. It's gentle, dorky humour about the things we all know we do.

Small essays on topics ranging from church to love to the Bible and even, the youth camp "Saturday Night Cryfest" (as the wife of a former youth pastor, um, YES), Acuff gives me the sense that he is laughing with us, not at us.

My personal favourites:

* Using "Faith Like a Child" as an escape pod from difficult theological discussions.
* Watching R-rated movies but only if they are violent.
* Judging fundamentalists for being judgmental
* Hating on mega churches
* Using "Let me pray about it" as a euphemism for "no"
* Falling in love on a mission trip
* The metro sexual worship leader
* Fearing your church will do something wacky the time you invite a friend
* Wishing you had an easy job, like one at church
* Side hugs

To be honest, on Jon Acuff's blog, my favourite posts are almost always what he refers to as his "Serious Wednesday" posts. They are worth subscribing to his blog for, my friends.

Verdict: If you have spent any amount of time around evangelical Christians, you'll laugh, you'll groan, you'll cry, you'll feel like someone read your mail. However, it is definitely a sub-culture book for us evangelicals.

You know that feeling you get when you are on the inside of an 'inside joke'. You know those stupid references to situations that happened on some road trip or outing with friends. Usually it's just a stupid word or catch phrase that outside of its context makes absolutely zero sense, but people who were there will still shout it out 2 years later and everyone that knows what is going on will laugh and remember, but everyone else who wasnt a part of that group will just look at you funny and think youre weird. DIDDLY IN THE MIDDLY, BINGO BANGO BONGO! Yup, I just threw one out there, now this blog post just go awkward... anyway. That exact situation is what Stuff Christians Like book by author/blogger/humorist Jon Acuff is. Its like reading 250 odd pages of inside jokes that most us Christians get, and laugh at because weve experienced it.

Reading through his book, is like someone has been in my head for all 28 years of my life, writing down everything I thought, experienced and have pondered about Christianity. Its really kind of a surreal experience that only a small subset of people will get. This book isnt for everyone, but for those who it is for, will laugh, cry and say to themselves, yup Jon you nailed that. Cause you know what? Ive Booty, God, Bootyd before, Ive had the internal conversation about how do I break up with my small group, and Ive used the words Missional Postmodern Relevance in a sentence before. In the end though, the best part of Jons satire is that he usually ends it with a nugget of truth. Like in an OHenry bar, where the comedy is the chocolaty goodness but you know you just bought the bar because of the nugget on the inside. I continue to read Jon because hes funny, but mainly because he lands on some truth that I needed to hear or be reaffirmed of.

I recommend you read his blog, don't skip serious Wednesday, and support the guy by picking up his book. Its only $10 and makes perfect reading material for those moments when you need to not take yourself so seriously and have a good laugh.

This book is hilarious. It arrived on Thursday, just before I was leaving to visit my future in-laws, so I took it with me, thinking I might be able to sneak a few pages here and there. On Thursday night, I arrived before my fiance and the house was nearly empty, so I curled up in the corner of the sofa and read for a little bit, thoroughly enjoying it. When everyone else arrived home, the book ended up on the coffee table where it (sort of) stayed for the rest of the weekend.

My fiance's brother picked it up and couldn't stop laughing. He read through the entire book in the course of a day, reading out parts that struck him as particularly amusing. My future father-in-law was frequently in stitches (he is generally an even-tempered man). And a group of his friends were over one morning and the book was passed around, laughed over and eagerly discussed.

It pokes fun at the little quirks Christian culture has and it gives us permission to laugh at ourselves. It helps us to stop taking ourselves so seriously and, wonderfully, points out the ways our thoughts aren't true. Jon Acuff does a great job of mixing humor and sincerity, and, on his blog especially, continues to point to God's great love.

I've already thought of several people I know who would love this book. I definitely recommend it.

I'd recommend this book to anyone who's been a Christan for 5 years or more...I'm guessing it will get progressively funnier for each decade you've had in church. It could really be titled 'Silly things Christians do' because that's pretty much what it is. It's good to have a laugh at some of our silliness. I laughed out loud many times - I think the prayer circle was one of my favourites! Probably not one for new Christians: a) they won't get most of the jokes and b) it will probably send them running ☺
